Nokia 1100 Online Banking Hack

An old candy-bar style Nokia 1100 mobile phone has been used to break into someone's online bank account, affirming why criminals are willing to paying thousands of euros for the device.

Using special software written by hackers, certain models of the 1100 can be reprogrammed to use someone else's phone number and receive their SMS (Short Message Service) messages, said Max Becker, CTO of Ultrascan Knowledge Process Outsourcing, a subsidiary of fraud investigation firm Ultrascan.

The Nokia 1100 hack is powerful since it undermines a key technology relied on by banks to secure transactions done over the Internet.

Banks in countries such as Germany and Holland send a one-time password called an mTAN (mobile Transaction Authentication Number) to a person's phone in order to allow, for example, the transfer of money to another account.

Since the Nokia 1100 can be reprogrammed to respond to someone else's number, it means cybercriminals can also obtain the mTAN by SMS. Cybercriminals must already have a person's login and password for a banking site, but that's easy since millions of computers worldwide contain malicious software that can record keystrokes.

Ultrascan obtained Nokia 1100 phones made in Bochum, Germany. Phones made around 2003 in that now-closed factory have the firmware version that can be hacked, Becker said. Nokia has sold more than 200 million of the 1100 and its successors, although it's unknown how many devices have the particular sought-after firmware.

Ultrascan was able to successfully reprogram an 1100 and intercept an mTAN, but just one time. Becker said they are undertaking further tests to see if the attack can be executed repeatedly.

"We've done it once," Becker said. "It looks like we know how to do it."

Ultrascan experts obtained the hacker software to reprogram the phone through its network of informants, said Frank Engelsman, a fraud and security specialist with the company.

That application allows a hacker to decrypt the Nokia 1100's firmware, Becker said. Then, the firmware can be modified and information such as the IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) number can be changed as well as the IMSI (International Mobile Subscriber Identity) number, which allows a phone to register itself with an operator.

The modified firmware is then uploaded to the Nokia 1100. Certain models of the 1100 used erasable ROM, which allows data to be read and written to the chip, Becker said. For the final step, the hacker must also clone a SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) card, which Becker said is technically trivial.

Nokia, which was closed on Thursday due to a holiday, could not be contacted. However, the company has said it does not believe there is a vulnerability in the 1100's software.

Becker said that may be semantically true, however, it's possible that the encryption keys used to encrypt the firmware have somehow slipped into the public domain. "We would really like to speak with Nokia," Becker said.

Ultrascan was also able to confirm that criminals are willing to pay a lot of money for the right Nokia 1100. An Ultrascan informant sold one of the devices recently in Tangiers, Morocco, for €5,500 (US$7,567), Engelsman said. Ultrascan previously confirmed data earlier this year that one Nokia 1100 sold for €25,000.

How to Use the Remote connection to help

Many of us have had the joy of trying to help somebody with some basic computer issue over the phone. If you don’t have the patience for it, it’s a great way to end up hairless and bitter by the age of 40. I recently helped a member of my family with the simple concept of moving a file from a CD-ROM to the hard drive. It took me 25 minutes to walk him through this action, whereas anybody familiar with Windows even at a basic level would accomplish this in 5 seconds. The problem is that I cannot see what he sees. Secondly, he is describing things in terms which Windows users do not use. It can be frustrating to say the least.



It got me thinking about remote tech support. If I could have simply logged into his computer and SHOWN him how to do it, we would have been done in a couple minutes.

Remote Tech Support



There are, today, multiple ways of logging into remote computers and controlling them from afar. They include:



* Remote Desktop (built into many versions of Windows)

* Virtual Network Computing (VNC)

* Third Party Services



Now, the first two are perfectly viable and can be done for free. However, you may run into some more complexities with these options. If you are trying to connect to a computer which is behind a network firewall, you may not be able to get past the firewall without some router configuration. Usually, this involves opening up certain ports on our router (VNC typically uses ports 5900 through 5906). Also, neither VNC or Remote Desktop are secure connections. While both can easily be protected with a password, a brute-force attack may be able to get through and gain access to the machine.



I highly prefer using a third-party service. The good news is that it doesn’t have to cost you anything. Logmein.com offers it for free.

I have been a user of Logmein.com for some time. I actually have a paid account with them. The difference between a paid account and a free account is basically the ability to transfer files between computers. But, if all you want is to control a remote PC (remote desktop), you can do that for free.



So, you want to use Logmein.com to help a member of your family with a computer problem? Have them do the following:



1. Surf on over to www.logmein.com

2. Have them create a new account. They should select the LogmeIn Free account for Personal Remote Access.

3. Once registration is complete, they need to install the LogMeIn software to their computer. It will be a small software module which runs as a service under Windows.

4. Next, they need to send you the username and password to their Logmein.com account. You will also need the password they chose to secure their computer.

5. Log into their account and you will see their computer there on the list. Click on it, enter the password for the computer, and you will soon be looking right at their desktop.



You can then control the PC as if you were sitting right in front of it. And, they will be able to watch you as you control the computer. They will see their mouse cursor moving around and see everything you are doing. The LogMeIn connection is secure, so you don’t have to worry about anybody spying on what you’re doing.

Using VNC Instead



If you just refuse to use a convenient service, then you can give VNC a try. VNC will involve installing a server to their computer and a client to your’s. I prefer TightVNC. It is open source and free. Just install TightVNC to both your computer and their’s. Make sure to specify their’s as a server and your’s as the client. Then, you will need to configure their router to allow the VNC ports through the firewall. Lastly, you will need to look up their IP address so that you can connect to the IP address directly using yout TightVNC client.

Intrusion Attack Through Port Scanning

Port scanning determines which ports are listening to the active connections on the subjected host. These ports represent potential communication channels. With the help of port scanning we get close to the network communication scenario. We get to know more about victim’s network which is useful for further attacks. Internet does not exclusively rely on TCP port 80, used by hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP). Any surfer surfing any website can gain the same level of proficiency as your average casual surfer. Port scanning can be efficiently done to reveal the secret’s about the host.



Automated port scanners are necessary to perform such scanning, which are available in the market for very small cost.

Hiding secret messages in internet traffic

Researchers have demonstrated a new way to hide secret messages in internet traffic that can elude even vigilant network operators.



The process is a network application of steganography, which is the ancient science and art of hiding messages in documents, pictures and other media in a way that can be easily detected by the intended recipient, but not by third parties. The researchers from the Warsaw University of Technology have found a way to apply the principle to network traffic by exploiting design weaknesses in TCP, or transmission control protocol.



RSTEG, short for Retransmission Steganography, works by manipulating the back-and-forth sequence and messages exchanged each time an internet packet is sent. Typically, a computer on the receiving end sends a confirmation each time one is successfully transmitted. RSTEG works by deliberately withholding the acknowledgment, which then prompts the packet to be resent.





"In the context of RSTEG, a sender replaces original payload with a steganogram instead of sending the same packet again," the paper, authored by Wojciech Mazurczyk, Miłosz Smolarczyk, and Krzysztof Szczypiorski, states. "When the retransmitted packet reaches the receiver, he/she can then extract hidden information."

The technique has important implications for network security because it can be used by attackers to conceal the leakage of confidential information, the paper warns. It goes on to detail four scenarios in which the attack can be used, including one that requires no control of intermediate nodes. The other three are harder to pull off, but they are also harder to detect by third parties.

"No real-world steganographic method is perfect; whatever the method, the hidden information can be potentially discovered," the researchers write. "In general, the more hidden information is inserted into the data stream, the greater the chance that it will be detected, for example, by scanning the data flow or by some other seganalysis methods."

To evade detection, those using the technique must limit the number of retransmissions to non-suspicious levels.

Steganography dates back to the Fifth Century BC at least, when Greek messengers buried messages on wax tablets before sealing them with beeswax. In more recent times, it's been used to sneak data into all kinds of electronic media, including digital photographs and executable files. The same Polish researchers who described RSTEG also developed a similar technique targeting voice over IP traffic.

While RSTEG works only with TCP, the principle can be applied to other protocols as well, including those for wireless networks. A PDF of the paper is available here

Massive ID fraud and cheque scam busted in NYC

A corporate identity theft ring that exploited the identities of local corporations, religious institutions, hospitals and even schools to run a cheque fraud scam has been busted in New York.

Investigators reckon the gang of 18 suspects made millions by impersonating workers from an estimated 350 New York-based organisations. Data purchased from corrupt bank insiders was used to lay the groundwork for the scam, which relied on cashing thousands of counterfeit payroll cheques. The fraudsters also plundered the bank accounts of individual victims, using data obtained from corrupt bank insiders to transfer funds to banks under the control of the gang.



Mules were recruited as payees on the counterfeit cheques, which were forged using scanners, cheque stock, magnetic ink, company logos and specialist software. The scam ran between October 2007 and February 2009. One bank alone lost $1.4m through the scam.
The gang was led by alleged masterminds Jasper Grayson, 25, and James Malloy, 26, according to an indictment unsealed this week. Renece Razor, a former teller at a JP Morgan Chase Bank branch in Manhattan, Ilaura Walker, a former worker at a TD Bank branch in Manhattan, and Keisha Polonio, a former clerk at an HSBC Bank branch in the Bronx, are all charged with stealing the personal data of identity theft victims before supplying the details to other members of the gang.

Police are investigating the possible involvement of other suspected bank workers in the scam as part of the ongoing investigation. ®

Create One-Click Shutdown and Reboot Shortcuts



his is really very easy one but very effective one. Enjoy it! First, create a shortcut on your desktop by right-clicking on the desktop, choosing New, and then choosing Shortcut. The Create Shortcut Wizard appears. In the box asking for the location of the shortcut, type shutdown. After you create the shortcut, double-clicking on it will shut down your PC.

But you can do much more with a shutdown shortcut than merely shut down your PC. You can add any combination of several switches to do extra duty, like this:

shutdown -r -t 01 -c “Rebooting your PC”

Double-clicking on that shortcut will reboot your PC after a one-second delay and display the message “Rebooting your PC.” The shutdown command includes a variety of switches you can use to customize it.

I use this technique to create two shutdown shortcuts on my desktop—one for turning off my PC, and one for rebooting. Here are the ones I use:

For close cooperation (full understanding) between a client and a server the client sends additional information about itself: a version and a name of an operating system, configuration of a browser (including its name and version) etc. This information can be necessary for the server in order to know which web-page should be given (open) to the client. There are different variants of web-pages for different configurations of browsers. However, as long as web-pages do not usually depend on browsers, it makes sense to hide this information from the web-server.
What your browser transmits to a web-server:
  • name and a version of an operating system

  • name and a version of a browser

  • configuration of a browser (display resolution, color depth, java / javascript support, …)

  • IP-address of a client

  • Other information

The most important part of such information (and absolutely needless for a web-server) is information about IP-address. Using your IP it is possible to know about you the following:
  • country where you are from

  • city

  • your provider?s name and e-mail

  • your physical address

Information, transmitted by a client to a server is available (accessible) for a server as environment variables. Every information unit is a value of some variable. If any information unit is not transmitted, then corresponding variable will be empty (its value will be undetermined).
These are some environment variables:
REMOTE_ADDR ? IP address of a client
HTTP_VIA ? if it is not empty, then a proxy is used. Value is an address (or several addresses) of a proxy server, this variable is added by a proxy server itself if you use one.
HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR ? if it is not empty, then a proxy is used. Value is a real IP address of a client (your IP), this variable is also added by a proxy server if you use one.
HTTP_ACCEPT_LANGUAGE ? what language is used in browser (what language a page should be displayed in)
HTTP_USER_AGENT ? so called “a user?s agent”. For all browsers this is Mozilla. Furthermore, browser?s name and version (e.g. MSIE 5.5) and an operating system (e.g. Windows 98) is also mentioned here.
HTTP_HOST ? is a web server?s name
This is a small part of environment variables. In fact there are much more of them (DOCUMENT_ROOT, HTTP_ACCEPT_ENCODING, HTTP_CACHE_CONTROL, HTTP_CONNECTION, SERVER_ADDR, SERVER_SOFTWARE, SERVER_PROTOCOL, …). Their quantity can depend on settings of both a server and a client.

Anonymity at work in Internet is determined by what environment variables “hide” from a web-server.
If a proxy server is not used, then environment variables look in the following way:

According to how environment variables “hided” by proxy servers, there are several types of proxies

Transparent Proxies
They do not hide information about your IP address:
REMOTE_ADDR = proxy IP

HTTP_VIA = proxy IP

HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR = your IP
The function of such proxy servers is not the improvement of your anonymity in Internet. Their purpose is information cashing, organization of joint access to Internet of several computers, etc.

Anonymous Proxies
All proxy servers, that hide a client?s IP address in any way are called anonymous proxies
Simple Anonymous Proxies
These proxy servers do not hide a fact that a proxy is used, however they replace your IP with its own:

REMOTE_ADDR = proxy IP

HTTP_VIA = proxy IP

HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR = proxy IP
These proxies are the most widespread among other anonymous proxy servers.
Distorting Proxies
As well as simple anonymous proxy servers these proxies do not hide the fact that a proxy server is used. However a client?s IP address (your IP address) is replaced with another (arbitrary, random) IP:
REMOTE_ADDR = proxy IP

HTTP_VIA = proxy IP

HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR = random IP address

High Anonymity Proxies
These proxy servers are also called “high anonymity proxy”. In contrast to other types of anonymity proxy servers they hide a fact of using a proxy:
REMOTE_ADDR = proxy IP

HTTP_VIA = not determined

HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR = not determined
That means that values of variables are the same as if proxy is not used, with the exception of one very important thing ? proxy IP is used instead of your IP address.

Summary
Depending on purposes there are transparent and anonymity proxies. However, remember, using proxy servers you hide only your IP from a web-server, but other information (about browser configuration) is accessible!

First of all, what you need is a forum to hack. For the sake of this tutorial, and for the safety of a specific site, I will not release the URL of the site that I will be hacking in this. I will be refering to it as “hackingsite”.

So you’ve got your target. You know the forum to want to hack, but how? Let’s find the user we want to hack. Typically, you’d want to hack the admin. The administrator is usually the first member, therefore his/her User ID will be “1″. Find the User ID of the administrator, or person you wish to hack. For this tutorial, let’s say his/her ID is “2″.

Got it? Well, now we are almost all set. So far, we know the site we wish to hack, and the member we wish to hack. In this case, we are hacking the administrator of “hackingsite”, which is User ID “2″.

Now we need a nice exploit. I preferably, for 1.3.1 forums, use one that is in common circulation around these forums. For those who don’t have it, here:

    Thats it. This much is enough. If you want, can change other settings also.

  8. After you have completed changing settings, click on “Create Remote file”. Now just add your picture to a winrar archive. Now, what you have to do is only send this keylog file to your victim. When victim will open this file, all keystrokes typed by victim will be sent to your email inbox. Thus, you will get all his passwords and thus will be able to hack his email accounts and even Myspace account password.

How to Access a router and what can you do after it ?

I’ve been doing this from past few months, and I when Manav said that it is a global problem, I feel to appreciate him for that.

Okei, so here we go,

There are actually two methods

  1. Manual (I love this)

  2. Remote (I still love this)

But before just illustrating the trick, I’d like to introduce some thing to you all. A router is a device that connects with the Lan Card/Ethernet or with the USB port of your computer, it is a gateway of your computer to the outside world.

It is assumed that with the introduction of router, direct access to your computer, which was possible in the Dial UP reign, is now abolished, but in this world nothing is safe, so we’ll see.

Manual Method

The Router and the computer make a small local Area Network.

There are different IP addresses for different devices/nodes in the LAN, normally the range starts from 192.168.1.1, you can check out your node’s IP, by viewing the properties of the Network Connection (if its connected).

Now, normally the router or the server (if in a larger network ), has the local IP 192.18.1.1. You can always access the configuration page, by visiting the local IP 192.168.1.1 , type this IP address on any web browser.

This will lead you to the configuration page, where it will ask you for the user name and password, see the snapshot

Now, here lies the biggest flaw of the global aspect, try this useername : admin, password :: admin, try this it will workin 95% cases, why ?, because even the IT gurus are n00bs enough for never looking in this problem, Its a global situation, from Japan to Pakistan.

So here you are in the Configuration page , now even if the password is not admin, and you’ve physical access to the router, just reset it, all it need is a pin ;)

In the Remote Method, all you need to know is the IP of the router, no local IP won’t get you to anybody’s router, so you need to know the IP when he is connected, there are so many methods, I’ll have a separate post for that.

Now the Question lies, what Can I do for fun ?

The most obvious thing that you can do is “trouble him/her”, how ?, well just navigate through the configuration pages, to find something like “Internet Connection “, It list the connections, see the snapshot

Now this is your work, out of the given list only one will be active, which one?, most probably the top one, edit it, change the VPI and VCI value, hola, you’re done, this trick will atleast trouble him for 2-3 days. And beside you can change many other things, that I leave on you ! :D

In certain Router, it is even possible to get the username of the Internet Connection and the password of the connection in hidden form, but everybody knows that the password is there, and since you’ve access to the PHP page you can get the damn password out,for example see this snap

What else can I do ?, well I’ven’t tried it but lets see, the router and the computer interacts by using a port, which port ? , we don’t know, it can be any of those 65000 ports, so running a port scanner ( you’ll find many ) is an advisable thing, go ahead and let me know !

Firefox Customization

Windows only: After we wrote about the All-Glass Firefox theme, reader bc//G_A wrote in with an even more impressive customization that enables the Aero Glass effect across almost every UI element.

Enabling the complete glass look requires more than a few steps—you'll need to install the Glasser extension, the Stylish extension, a number of user styles, and another extension to fix up the font colors. All of the instructions for setting up the glass theme can be found in the DeviantART guide, but the glass menus in the screenshot are thanks to the userstyles.org link sent in by reader Scott. Readers should note that the glass menus are a little buggy, and the overall style hides a lot of UI elements you might be used to, so while it's not for everybody it's an interesting customization worth a look for those serious about tweaking their browser.

You'll need to be running the latest beta of Firefox under Windows 7 or Vista to be able to use the glass menus, but you can install an older version of Glasser and use the rest of the glass effects.
