Brand Your Websites Url With A Favicon

Have you ever noticed that when you look at your browser favorites menu or the address bar, some entries have their own little icon beside their URL?
It's called a "Favicon" (a graphic file with a .ico extension) and it's placed in the root directory of the web site. Every time you bookmark a site that has its own favicon.ico file, it is added to your browser, and it will be visible from then on in the favorites menu and in the address bar

At the beginning, only large websites had a favicon, but now you too can create one and use it to brand your website. The first thing you have to do is to create your favicon. To be displayed by browsers, it must have a size of 16x16 pixels. To create one, you can use a graphics program called Icon Forge

You can either create an icon from scratch, or import a 16x16 '.gif' or '.jpg' file and save it as a '.ico' file.
You will then have to save your icon with the default name of 'favicon.ico', and upload it to the root directory of your website (where your index page is). Finally, after that, you must associate your icon to your web page. You do that by including the following HTML code immediately after the HEAD tag of your page:

link REL="SHORTCUT ICON" HREF="http://www.yourwebsite.com/favicon.ico"

Once you've done that, that's it. To try it out, go to your web page and add your page to your favorites. You should be able to see the favicon next to your bookmarked page title. Also, the next time you type your URL in the address bar, you will see your favicon to the left of the URL.
(Favicons work with Internet Explorer 5 or newer, and with recent versions of Netscape.)

Best Md5 Checksum Creator/Checker

This open source utility is used to calculate the MD5 checksum of a file using L. Peter Deutsch's MD5 code. One of the most common uses is to make sure that a file that you have downloaded is not corrupt. Some websites post the MD5 checksum of a file on their download page. Once you have downloaded the file, use winMd5Sum to get the MD5 checksum of the file on your computer. Then make sure that the MD5 checksum from the web site is the same. If they are the same, then your file is exactly the same as the file on the website.

How To Backup Windows Xp Home Edition

Your computer cost you from hundreds to thousands of dollars, but the computer itself is not the most valuable part. The data on the hard disk is the most valuable part. How many hours of work did you put into creating that data? One little event, like a power line spike from a lightning strike, and all that work could be lost. Unfortunately, backing up with Windows XP Home Edition is not as simple as it should be.

The first step is to choose a backup device. You might choose a tape drive or a DVD drive, but those devices might require drivers to be installed before you could restore from them. The simplest option is to install a second hard drive in your computer.
The second hard drive doesn't have to be equal to your main hard drive. You can use an older, smaller hard drive as the backup device, as long as the backup drive has more "Free Space" than the main hard drive has "Used Space". doesn't bother me.

Install a Second Hard Drive

When installing a second hard drive in your computer, it's important to configure the drives correctly. Your motherboard should have two ATA (sometimes called IDE) connectors. The primary connector should have a cable with two drive connectors. The end connector should go to your main hard drive, the middle connector can be used for a backup hard drive. The second motherboard ATA connector should go to your CD-ROM.
On the back of each hard drive is a jumper. The jumper on your main hard drive should be set to the "Master" position. The jumper on your backup hard drive should be set to "Slave" position. Most modern computers use "Cable Select", so you can set both jumpers to the "Cable Select" position. Don't forget the power connector for the second drive.
When you restart your computer, the second drive should be automatically recognized and be designated with the next drive letter available, usually E: (D: being used for the CD-ROM drive).

Format the Second Hard Drive

Generally, you will want to re-format the second hard drive after installation to remove any previously installed operating system and to remove any previous file access rights. To format the drive, select Start | Settings | Control Panel | Administration Tools | Computer Management. In the "Computer Management" window, under "Storage", click on "Disk Management".
Right click on the backup disk's drive letter. In the popup menu, select All Tasks | Format... In the Warning dialog box that appears, click on the "Yes" button. In the "Format" dialog box, in the "File system" drop-down list, select NTFS. Click on the "OK" button. Again, in the Warning dialog box that appears, click on the "Yes" button.

Install the Backup Utility

Windows XP Home Edition doesn't install the Backup utility by default. You'll need to install it manually from your Windows XP CD-ROM.
1. After inserting the CD-ROM, open Control Panel's "Add or Remove Programs" utility. In the "Add or Remove Programs" utility", click on the "Add New Programs" button, then click on the "CD or Floppy" button.
2. In the "Run Installation Program" dialog box that appears, navigate to the VALUEAD/MSFT/NTBACKUP folder on the CD-ROM and select the file NTBACKUP.MSI. Click on the "Finish" button. The Backup utility will be installed.
Perform a Full Backup
To perform a backup, select Start | Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Backup to open the Backup Utility.
When the backup is complete, turn off the computer and remove the data and power cables from the backup drive. It doesn't make sense to leave the backup drive connected because if the cause of a failure is a power spike, it will take out both drives. Next time you want to backup you'll need to reinstall the cables.

How to Perform a Restore

In the unfortunate event that your computer crashes and you can't get it back by any other means, you'll need to reinstall Windows XP from the CD-ROM. (Automated System Recovery is not supported in Windows XP Home Edition.) You'll need to re-install the Backup utility. Then you'll need to shut down the computer to install the data and power cables to the backup drive. Restart the computer and use the Backup Utility to restore Windows XP from the backup file.
When using this backup method, it's important to be careful not to break any pins when you are removing and installing the data cable of the hard drive. And if your computer doesn't use "cable Select", don't forget to change the jumper on the main hard drive back to "Single".

All about cleaning your Registry:

A long time ago, in a land forgotten by time (before Microsoft Windows 95), Windows computers and their programs had .ini (configuration) files that stored information. These files determined how a program ran, its environment, and a host of other things.

Then the Windows Registry came onto the scene, with each key in the registry being similar to a bracketed heading in the old .ini file and values similar to entries under the .ini headings. However, registry keys can have nested subkeys with string or binary data that .ini files don't support. Does the registry periodically need cleaning? Let's take a look.
Hives and keys?

A registry hive is a group of keys, subkeys, and values in the registry that has a set of supporting files that contain backups of its data. The registry has gone through very little changes, so if you're interested in learning more about it, check out " What's all the buzz about registry hives?"

If you're not too familiar with the registry and how it works, there are a slew of different companies that would like to sell you a registry cleaner. Do you need to clean your registry? Let's look at the facts.
What registry cleaners claim to do:

What do registry cleaners claim to accomplish? Well, some of them claim to reduce the size of the registry and remove orphaned entries to speed up Windows. Sure, removing orphaned entries will reduce the size, but today's hard drives have gigabytes of free space and 10 MB isn't going to make a difference.

Besides, no one can give you a benchmark telling you how much speed you'll gain. The reason they can't tell you how much faster your system will run is because the size of the registry has nothing to do with the speed at which your machine operates.

The .ini files are flat text files, which require sequential searching. Registry files are database files, complete with indexing. If the index is up to date — and the system rebuilds it after each change, so it probably is — then size makes no difference.

Other registry cleaners say they'll remove invalid registry entries that can cause errors in other installed programs. Programs keep registry entries in their own keys and rarely reference keys written by other programs. They also include an uninstall routine that deletes the entries when you remove the program.

Many older programs may not work this way, and maybe some of today's programs don't do the best job of clearing their entries. However, the system will never reference the data that they leave behind.

Some registry cleaners claim that they correct problems with Windows crashes and error messages. I've been an administrator on Windows machines since NT 3.5, and I've never traced a crash or error message to the registry — nor have I met any administrator who has.

Finally, some registry cleaners say they remove entries pointing to nonexisting files that are invalid and require deletion. If a registry entry points to a file that's no longer present, of course you can delete them. However, if an entry points to something that doesn't exist, then the system will never use it. Do you delete every unused file on your computer?
Who needs registry cleaners?

There are two types of people who possibly might need registry cleaners. The first are those people who open up the registry and make manual changes. These people know exactly what they're doing; they follow precise instructions from the manufacturer, or they just like to tinker around and see what happens. This group might need to undo what they've done and could use a registry cleaner.

The second group of people who definitely need to clean their registries are programmers and developers. During the development of a program, you might go through hundreds of install/uninstall routines. It's important to ensure that you're working with a clean machine to make sure previous problems don't interfere with the latest version of your software.
Final thoughts:

If you're a developer or someone who fiddles with the registry, then by all means find yourself a good registry cleaner. As for the rest of us, leave the registry alone, and don't buy into the hype of needing to clean your registry.
